Storm

The howling wind whistled through the ropes so that the men had to shout at each other just to be heard. The waves seemed to be getting bigger by the minute and from time to time one would break over the gunnels, swamping the deck and wetting those on board. This was not the first storm these men had endured. Some of them had been professional fishermen on this lake all their lives. But this night was different.

They were crossing the lake at the suggestion of their master, a rabbi, who they had been following for more than a year. During that day, large crowds had gathered on the beach to hear the rabbi’s amazing teaching. Many had come hoping to find healing. They came because word was spreading across the countryside about the power and authority that flowed through this man. It had been a busy day, and they were tired.

To escape the crowds, the master suggested they cross to the other side of the lake. So, as the sun was setting, they got into a boat and set off. Everything was going to plan, so the master went and laid down in the back of the small boat and fell asleep, seemingly oblivious to the worsening situation developing around him.

Another wave broke over the side of the boat, and fearing for their lives, the men went and woke the sleeping rabbi.

“Teacher! Do you not care that we are perishing? Save us Lord, or we are all going to die.”

The master got up from his resting place and stood facing the storm. Raising his voice, he rebuked the winds and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still.”

At that moment, the wind died down and the water became calm.
Turning to his disciples, he said, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

The men were both terrified and amazed, and they said to each other, “What kind of man is this? Who is he, that even the wind and the waves obey him?”

So they continued across the lake and arrived safely to the beach on the other side.
